Bunkering in Limassol

Limassol is the main port on Cyprus's southern coast. The city hosts many ship operators and technical managers, so bunkering and crew changes often fall on the same call.

A January 2024 report says one supplier bought a new tanker to deliver VLSFO and MGO in port. The Ports Authority's 2019 tariff has lines for annual licences for bunker companies and for deliveries within the port area.

Bunkering Process in Limassol

  1. Call Plan

If the call also includes crew change or provisions, say so, as bunkering has to fit the same window.

  2. Route

For a ship going to or coming from Suez, Limassol sits in the same plan as Port Said. State clearly which port you want quoted.

  3. Delivery

Delivery is by a vessel licensed for the port area. Place and time are settled through the agent.

  4. Documents

The EU rule requires the changeover time in the logbook at berth. The BDN is kept for three years and the sample for at least 12 months.

Bunkering Requirements in Limassol

Rules change. Confirm current practice with the port agent.

  • Institutions

Shipping affairs have been under the Shipping Deputy Ministry since 2018. The bunker licence for the port area appears in the Cyprus Ports Authority tariff.

  • Scrubbers

There is no basin-wide open-loop ban in the Mediterranean ECA, and rules are local (Skuld). Ask your agent about the current position at Limassol.

  • EU Rules

Directive 2016/802 applies 0.10% at berth and requires the changeover time in the logbook, with exemptions for ships at berth under two hours and ships on shore power. FuelEU Maritime covers ships above 5,000 GT calling at EU ports under any flag: well-to-wake GHG intensity must be 2% below the 2020 baseline in 2025 and 6% below in 2030.
