Bunkering in Port Said
Port Said lies at the northern end of the Suez Canal. According to the Canal Authority's page, the southbound convoy starts at 03:30 and the northbound at 04:00. East Port Said is a container transhipment port. Argus reported in December 2025 that some suppliers had moved to Port Said and paused Suez operations.
When MEPC.361(79) drew the ECA, it left a small box outside it in front of the canal entrance. Its corners are 31°29′N 32°16′E, 31°29′N 32°28.48′E, 31°14′N 32°32.62′E and 31°14′N 32°16′E. A ship inside counts as outside the ECA, and 0.10% starts when it leaves the box for the Mediterranean.

Bunkering Process in Port Said
Transit Date
State the canal transit date and direction. A ship joining the southbound convoy has the 23:00 limit, so bunkering ends before it. The Authority's page is undated, so confirm times with your agent.
Changeover
A ship leaving the box northwards leaves on 0.10% fuel. The changeover is planned accordingly and recorded.
Barge Delivery
In 2023 SCZone announced a bunkering set-up at the Port Said anchorage with a floating storage unit and two barges. Barge and location are confirmed at the offer stage.
Documents
Egypt's MARPOL Annex VI status is a separate matter; under its flag's rules the ship still keeps the BDN and sample for the MARPOL periods.

Scrubbers in the Canal
According to a January 2020 Maritime Executive report, Canal Authority circular 08/2019 sets no conditions on fuel or open-loop systems until Egypt ratifies Annex VI, but does not allow washwater discharge during transit. Ask your agent about the current version.
MARPOL Annex VI
IMO reported a national workshop on Egypt's accession to Annex VI in December 2024. Confirm the current status with IMO or your agent.
Planned Projects
A November 2025 report says Egypt plans a canal bunkering project with fixed stations and barges. It is not yet an operating service.

Port Said Bunker Supply: Common Questions
Is Port Said inside the Mediterranean ECA?
The box in front of the canal entrance is outside the ECA, and the Mediterranean beyond the box is inside.
Can a ship bunker while waiting for the convoy?
Yes, but bunkering has to end before the convoy time. Time and place are confirmed with the agent.
Can a scrubber be used in the Suez Canal?
According to a 2020 report, the Authority's circular does not allow washwater discharge during transit. Plan for closed-loop operation or compliant fuel.
